Woman slams ESPN for ‘sexualizing’ her and her friend eating ice cream

The incident occurred during the Men’s College World Series championships earlier this week.

A TikTok user has accused ESPN of ‘sexualizing’ her and her friend on television following their viral moment at the 2024 Men’s College World Series championships. On Monday night (June 24), the Tennessee Volunteers secured a 6-5 victory over the Texas A&M Aggies in Game 3, clinching their inaugural national title at the MCWS championships. Annie and her friend, avid baseball fans, were present at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Nebraska, enjoying ice cream while watching the game.

While eating the sweet treats, ESPN cameras panned in on the women and commentator Karl Ravech noted: “You gotta get it before it melts and it’s liquid.”

Another added: “A night like tonight you’re working fast.”

After the incident, the video of the duo eating their ice cream cones went viral, prompting Annie to use social media to criticize the sports company for its role in the situation.

“20 seconds dedicated with commentary to us eating our ice cream, we all knew what direction that video was going to head in,” she said in a five-minute TikTok video.

“And before we knew it, the TikTok creeps got a hold of it, and the next morning we woke up being compared to the ‘Hawk Tuah’ girl — no shade to her, girl, do whatever.”

She mentioned that she and her friend decided to buy ice cream to cool down.

However, they had to eat quickly because it was melting ‘ridiculously fast’.

Annie stated that she initially received texts from friends who had seen them on television and learned about her increasing social media presence.

“What’s funnier than a woman eating an ice cream cone or eating a hot dog or something that can be overly sexualized,” she complained.

“But ESPN can keep it vague enough and the ambiguity is what protects them — when they just open the door for f***ing creeps to come in and do whatever they want with it.”

The content creator further claimed that she’d read a myriad of ‘absolutely repulsing’ comments from people who had seen the clip before alleging that women ‘are not welcome in the sports world’.

Regarding the criticism Taylor Swift faced for attending several NFL games last season, Annie remarked, “I don’t have Taylor Swift’s level of fame. But it’s a recurring theme that women can’t simply be present in these environments without drawing comments or attention. We were just trying to enjoy a baseball game in 100-degree heat, and heaven forbid we eat some ice cream.”

Later in the video, Annie called on the cable sports channel — jointly owned by The Walt Disney Company and Hearst Communications — to “stop turning sports into an unwelcoming and unsafe space for women.”

“We can’t enjoy a meal in peace, we can’t dress in peace, we can’t do anything without it being overly sexualized and taken out of context.”

She noted that she and her friend had been present the entire time and wondered why the cameras hadn’t shown them earlier.

Since posting her complaint video on TikTok, which has now garnered 5.7 million views, viewers have flooded in with their opinions.

One commenter expressed sympathy, saying, “I’m deeply sorry this happened to you. My friend and I were eating hotdogs and were uncomfortably featured on the Jumbotron for a prolonged period.”

Another viewer shared their disappointment, stating, “My husband and I witnessed this and both found it appalling right away. Why can’t they simply allow you to enjoy your ice cream in peace?”

A third commenter wrote, “Well done for speaking out. I hope this encourages many others to advocate for themselves and others facing similar situations.”
