Giant 16th-Century ‘Colossus’ Sculpture In Florence, Italy Has Entire Rooms Hidden Inside

This monumental figure, part man and part mountain, was constructed by the renowned Italian sculptor Giambologna in the late 1500s, serving as a representation of Italy’s rugged Appenine mountains. Named Appennino, this colossal mountain deity stands at a towering height of 35 feet within the grounds of Villa di Pratolino in Tuscany.

Concealed within the rugged, mountainous statue lies a fascinating secret – its interior houses several functional rooms that animate this colossal figure. The creature held in his left hand emits water sourced from an underground stream, while rumors suggest that his head contains a space designed for a fireplace, intended to release smoke through his nostrils when lit.

The park where this colossus currently resides, Villa Demidoff, will be open on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 10 AM to 7 PM until the end of October.
