Elephant Reunites with British Zookeeper After 32 Years, Instantly Recognizing Him

A heartwarming reunion occurred between a British zookeeper and an elephant he cared for over 30 years ago.

Peter Adamson, who had worked as a keeper at Calderpark Zoo in Glasgow during the 1970s, was recognized by his former companion, Kirsty, an Asian elephant, even after decades apart.

Kirsty lived at Calderpark Zoo until 1987, when she was relocated. After losing track of her whereabouts, Mr. Adamson discovered that she now resides in Germany at Neunkirchen Zoo.

Determined to reconnect, he arranged a visit. During their emotional reunion, Kirsty greeted him warmly, wrapping her trunk around him as Mr. Adamson gently stroked her.

Mr. Adamson reflected on the moment, “I was curious if the saying ‘an elephant never forgets’ was true. Her recognition and acceptance of me was incredibly moving. It’s a memory I will always cherish.”

According to the zookeepers, Kirsty likely recognized Mr. Adamson by his voice. Now that he knows where she lives, he plans to visit her as often as possible.

Born in 1967, Kirsty has lived in several European zoos. After leaving Glasgow, she was relocated to Chester Zoo in England, where she met another elephant, Judy.
